Handheld Thermal Pad Thickness (mm) Guide
Modding the cooling on your Steam Deck, Odin 2, or RG35XX? Using a thermal pad that is just 0.5mm too thick can bow thin handheld motherboards and crack BGA solder balls, while one that is 0.2mm too thin causes instant thermal throttling. Explore exact vernier caliper specs, Shore OO hardness, and compression tolerances.

The Over-Thickness BGA Fracture Hazard
Handheld motherboards are typically 0.8mm to 1.0mm thick (compared to 1.6mm on desktop motherboards) to save weight and housing depth.
When an oversized or stiff pad (e.g. 1.5mm instead of 0.8mm) is installed, tightening the mounting screws exerts a center bending moment governed by beam deflection theory:
The PCB bows downward away from the heatsink. Underneath the BGA package, microscopic lead-free solder balls undergo severe shear stress, leading to broken solder joints, memory bus errors, or permanent console bricking.
The Under-Thickness Thermal Air Gap Penalty
What happens if you err on the safe side and choose a pad that is too thin?
Thermal conductivity k compares as follows:
- ●High-End Silicone Pad: 8.0 to 15.0 W/m·K.
- ●Trapped Air Gap: 0.026 W/m·K (Over 500x worse heat conductor!).
Even a microscopic 0.05mm air gap between the pad and heatsink creates an insulating thermal barrier. The chip will spike past 95°C and throttle within 30 seconds of launching a 3D game.

| Device Model | Cooling Location | Stock Gap | Safe Replacement | Durometer Spec | Conductivity | Engineering Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | LPDDR5 RAM & VRM Inductors | 0.50 mm | 0.50 - 0.75 mm | Ultra-Soft (Shore 25-30 OO) | 8.0+ W/mK | High: Stiff pads tilt APU heatsink causing 100°C throttling. |
| Steam Deck LCD | LPDDR4 RAM & Power Stages | 1.00 mm | 1.00 mm (Soft Only) | Soft (Shore 30-35 OO) | 6.0+ W/mK | Moderate: Never use 1.5mm pads; bends M.2 shield. |
| Ayn Odin 2 / Odin 2 Portal | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to Vapor Chamber | 0.50 mm | 0.50 mm or PTM7950 | High Compression (Shore 30 OO) | 12.8 W/mK | Zero tolerance: 0.5mm exact gap to active vapor chamber. |
| Retroid Pocket 5 | SD865 & RAM to Copper Heat Spreader | 1.00 mm | 0.80 - 1.00 mm | Soft (Shore 35 OO) | 8.5 W/mK | Low: Generous clearance with copper heat pipe. |
| Retroid Pocket 4 Pro | Dimensity 1100 to Fan Heatpipe | 1.00 mm | 1.00 mm | Soft (Shore 30-35 OO) | 8.5 W/mK | Ensure VRM inductors maintain firm thermal contact. |
| Anbernic RG556 / RG406V | Unisoc T820 to Heat Shield | 1.20 mm | 1.00 - 1.20 mm (or Viscous Putty) | Ultra-Soft (Shore 25 OO) | 6.0 W/mK | Uneven stamped aluminum shield; K5 Pro putty works best. |
| Anbernic RG35XX SP / H / Plus | Allwinner H700 to Rear Metal Plate | 0.80 mm | 0.50 - 1.00 mm (Soft) | Soft Compressible | 4.0 - 6.0 W/mK | 1.5mm pad will bow plastic housing preventing latch closure. |
| TrimUI Smart Pro | Allwinner A133P to Aluminum Ingot | 1.50 mm | 1.20 - 1.50 mm | Medium-Soft | 4.0 W/mK | Large gap between SoC and rear aluminum block. |
